Deomornoi Degree College: A Pillar of Higher Education in Rural Assam
Deomornoi Degree College, located in the culturally rich and historically significant Deomornoi area of Darrang district, Assam, stands as a beacon of higher education in the region. Just 15 kilometres from Mangaldai, the district headquarters, the college is nestled near the revered Siala Vaishnab Temple and the scenic Mornoi River. The 25 Bigha green campus offers a peaceful and rustic environment, ideal for learning and personal growth.
The college was established on 19th June 1993, born from a grassroots initiative led by the local community. At that time, students had limited access to higher education, often having to travel far or abandon their academic aspirations. Recognizing this gap, the people of Deomornoi and surrounding areas came together to build an institution that could serve local students.
The early years were marked by struggle and selfless dedication. With no government support, teachers and staff served without pay, driven purely by the mission to educate. Their perseverance bore fruit when the Government of Assam provincialized the college on 14th August 2013, recognizing its contribution to education in the region.
Affiliated with Gauhati University, Deomornoi Degree College offers undergraduate programmes in Arts. Students can pursue both Honours and General courses in disciplines such as English, Assamese, Economics, Education, Geography, History, Political Science, and Philosophy. A team of highly qualified and dedicated faculty members ensures that students receive quality education, with a strong focus on critical thinking, analytical skills, and subject expertise.
Over time, the college has developed essential infrastructure to support academic and extracurricular needs. The campus features classrooms, a library, offices for administrative staff and faculty, a students’ union room, washrooms for boys and girls, a playground, a garden, and a bicycle stand. To further enhance the learning environment, a digital classroom and e-library are currently under construction, funded by the Government of Assam.
In 2023, Deomornoi Degree College received 2(f) recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC), a milestone that highlighted its growing stature in the academic landscape. This was followed by a successful National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) evaluation in February 2024, earning the college a “B” grade with a CGPA of 2.28. These achievements reflect the institution’s commitment to maintaining high academic standards.
Beyond academics, the college actively promotes co-curricular and community engagement through various committees and programmes. The National Service Scheme (NSS) plays a key role, offering students opportunities to participate in social service, leadership development, and real-world problem-solving. These activities help instil a sense of responsibility and community awareness among students, enriching their college experience.
Despite its progress, the college faces challenges, particularly in staffing and resource management. Vacant teaching and non-teaching positions—including the librarian—remain pressing concerns. The provincialization of management-sanctioned posts and the recruitment of permanent staff are critical steps for the institution’s continued growth.
Nevertheless, Deomornoi Degree College remains a vibrant institution dedicated to its founding mission—offering accessible, quality education to rural youth. With ongoing infrastructural upgrades, committed educators, and strong community support, the college continues to play a vital role in shaping the academic and cultural landscape of the region.
